# Roles and permissions

> Understand workspace and inbox access in Clearline.

Clearline uses workspace roles for global access and inbox roles for shared conversation queues. Keep workspace admin access limited, then grant day-to-day access through inbox membership and feature-specific assignment.

## Workspace roles

| Role       | Access                                                                                                                         |
| ---------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Owner** | Full workspace ownership. The owner can manage all settings and members. |
| **Admin** | Can manage workspace settings, members, channels, feature configuration, and shared resources. |
| **Member** | Can use the app, work assigned conversations, appointments, contacts, opportunities, and tasks based on configured membership. |

<Warning>
  Admins can change operational settings such as channels, compliance rules, workspace business hours, and agent defaults. Assign admin access only when the person needs that control.
</Warning>

## Inbox roles

Shared inboxes have their own member list.

| Inbox role | Use this for |
| ---------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Owner** | The inbox creator or system owner. |
| **Admin** | People who should manage inbox settings, channels, members, routing, and agent behavior. |
| **Member** | People who should receive assignments and respond to conversations. |

Personal inboxes are tied to a single user. Team management and routing settings are disabled for personal inboxes.

## Access patterns

    Assign **Admin** at the workspace level. Add them to shared inboxes only if they also work conversations.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Sales or service rep" icon="user">
    Assign **Member** at the workspace level. Add them as a member of the relevant inboxes and appointment types.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Appointment advisor" icon="calendar">
    Assign **Member**, then add them as an advisor on the appointment types they can be booked for.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Conversation manager" icon="inbox">
    Assign **Member**, then add them as an inbox admin when they need to control routing or inbox configuration.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

## Remove access

To remove workspace access, go to **Settings → Members**, open the member actions menu, and choose **Remove member**.

To remove inbox access without removing the person from the workspace, open the inbox, go to **Members**, and remove them from that inbox.
